Assembly and design
1. Sew the tail pieces into the opening left after knitting the body. At the base (near the body), you can sew the tail pieces together with 1-2 stitches.

2. Determine the eye placement: they should be located approximately in the middle of the body from the sides, starting from rows 13-14 from the start. To ensure symmetry and to create holes for the buttonholes, I used a thick knitting needle. Pierce the body all the way through, checking (by turning the body, looking from all sides) that everything is straight.

3. Make the eyes: cut teardrop-shaped pieces from a piece of white felt, make a slit in the center, and slide them onto the button eye loops. If your eyes aren’t attached to a loop, glue them to the felt. Apply a small amount of glue to the back of the felt and sew/glue the eyes in place. Make sure the white felt pieces are uniform and symmetrical!
Insert black thread (sewing thread or floss) into the needle and embroider the upper eyelid and eyelashes with a few stitches.

4. Attach the fins. First, determine the optimal location for them, pinning them and checking for symmetry. Find the approximate location for the fins as follows: count down 5 sc from the eye, then count 6-7 rows toward the tail from this point. This is a rough guide; you might prefer the fins closer to the nose or the tail—it’s up to you. Sew the fins to the body, securing them only by the last 2-3 rows of the fin.

5. Embroider the smile. Here, too, you have plenty of room for your imagination. I prefer a half-smile on one side: bring the thread down the middle of the face and, using 1-2 stitches, embroider the mouth toward one of the eyes. You can shape the mouth with a drawstring or embroider a full smile “from ear to ear.”
