Tutorial: how to make an amigurumi bear

To make the amigurumi bear you need to work the body as one piece, starting from the legs up to the neck. Instead, all the other pieces will be worked separately and then sewn onto the body. We’ve used knitting abbreviations throughout the tutorial which you can find under the heading Stitches.

How to make the bear’s head

Depending on which bear you choose to make, take the Piuma yarn in colour Natural White or Marrakech and get a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US.

Round 1: cast on 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
round 2: 6 incs (12)
round 3: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following sts) rep 6 times (18)
round 4: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 2 sts) rep 6 times (24)
round 5: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 3 sts) rep 6 times (30)
round 6: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 4 sts) rep 6 times (36)
round 7: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 5 sts) rep 6 times (42)
round 8: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 6 sts) rep 6 times (48)
round 9: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 7sts) rep 6 times (54)
round 10: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 8 sts) rep 6 times (60)
round 11: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 9 sts) rep 6 times (66).
From the 12th to the 22nd round {11 rounds}: sc all the sts (66)
round 23: (dec, sc in the following 9 sts) rep 6 times (60)
round 24: (dec, sc in the following 8 sts) rep 6 times (54)
round 25: (dec, sc in the following 7 sts) rep 6 times (48)
round 26: (dec, sc in the following 6 sts) rep 6 times (42).
Place the safety eyes between rounds 18 and 19 at about 15 cm / 6″ apart.
Start stuffing the head and continue stuffing while you’re working.
Round 27: (dec, sc in the following 5 sts) rep 6 times (36)
round 28: (dec, sc in the following 4 sts) rep 6 times (30)
round 29: (dec, sc in the following 3 sts) rep 6 times (24).
Cut the thread leaving enough length for sewing.

With the black embroidery thread and a wool needle, embroider the nose between rounds 19 and 20 and the snout between rounds 21 and 22.

How to make the amigurumi bear’s ears

Still using Piuma yarn in colour Natural White or Marrakech and a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US start working as so:
round 1: cast on 6 sc in the magic ring (6)
round 2: 6 incs (12)
From the 3rd round to the 5th round {3 rounds}: sc all the sts (12).
Cut the thread leaving enough for sewing. Don’t stuff the ear, but instead flatten it into a semicircle shape. Sew the ears onto the side of the head between rows 8 and 12.

How to make the bear’s legs

Continue using the yarn that you’ve chosen for the project and crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US.

From the 5th to 8th round {4 rounds}: sc all the sts (24).

Cut and secure the thread. Make the other leg but don’t cut the thread and continue working the body.

How to make the amigurumi bear’s body

Still using the chosen yarn and the crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US, continue working and put the second leg near to the first one and go ahead with these steps:

round 9: sc in the following 21 sts of the first leg, skip the last 3 sts of the first leg and the next 3 sts of the second leg, sc in the following 21 sts of the second leg, place a stitch marker in the last sts [42]

round 10: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 13 sts) rep 3 times (45)
round 11: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 14 sts) rep 3 times (48)
round 12: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following 15 sts) rep 3 times (51)

round 32: (dec, sc in the following 3 sts) rep 6 times (24).

Stuff the legs and body. Cut and secure the thread.

How to make the bear’s arms

To finalise your work you now need to make the arms using the Piuma yarn and the crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US.Round 1: cast on 5 sc in the magic ring (5)round 2: 5 incs (10)round 3: (inc in the following sts, sc in the following sts) rep 5 times (15).From the 4th to the 10th round {7 rounds}: sc all the sts (15)round 11: dec in the following 13 sts (14)round 12: sc all the sts (14)round 13: dec, sc in the following 12 sts (13)round 14: sc all the sts (13)round 15: dec, sc in the following 11 sts (12)

Stuff the arms. Cut and secure the thread leaving enough to sew on the arms between rounds 28 and 29 of the body.

How to make the tail of the amigurumi bear

Using the Piuma yarn in Natural white or Marrakech and with a crochet hook n° 4 EU / G-6 US start working as so:

1st round: cast on 6 sc in the magic ring (6)

2nd round: 6 incs (12)
From the 3rd round to the 5th round {3 rounds}: sc all the sts (12)

Cut the thread leaving enough to sew with. Don’t stuff the tail, but instead flatten it as if to make a semicircle. Sew it onto the back of the body where you think is best.

How to make the scarf for the amigurumi bear

Lastly, to add a touch of style to the bear we’ve chosen to create a scarf to match each version: for the white bear we’ve used Cyrcus yarn colour. Black Cherry. You’ll need a crochet hook n° 5 EU /  H-8 US and then cast on 1+3 ch (the 3 ch always count as 1 dc).

Stripe 1: 2 dc in the fourth ch from the hook, turn the work over
stripes 2 – 6 {5 stripes}: 3 ch and 1 dc in the first sts (to get the increase), work the dc until the end of the stripe, turn the work over
stripes 7 – 41 {or until you get to a length of 65 cm / 25.6″}: 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), dc in all the sts, turn [8]
stripes 42 – 46: 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), dc all the sts until 2 sts from the end of the stripe, skip 1 sts, dc the last sts of the stripe, turn the work over.

Finish off the scarf by turning the work over and make 1 sl st in the last sts of the stripe to close the scarf with a pointy end. Cut and secure the thread.
Now all that’s left to do is create 2 pompoms with the Cyrcus yarn colour. Cotton Candy and sew them onto both ends of the scarf.

To make the 2 pompoms we suggest reading the tutorial on how to make a seamless beanie.

However, for Bruno bear we’ve used Piuma yarn in the colours Ireland and Paradise.

You’ll need the crochet hook n° 5 EU /  H-8 US for this one too and just follow the same chart as for the white bear’s, changing colour every 2 strips. To change the colour, don’t cut the thread but leave it hanging and pick it up in the next 2 stripes, taking care not to stretch the filo too much.
